Ok homies, I just need a brief overview of some copyright stuff. We’re doing this project at school (A short CSI: Pueblo episode) and we want to use some music. However, my asshole of a teacher told us we had to fully abide by the copyright laws. Is there some loophole I could jump though, like since it’s a nonprofit thing, or are the laws completely steadfast?

Copyright law and licenses, some links for my doubts?
hi there. my name is dave, and i am trying to get in to the website development business.
there is me and a friend, between us we know all the code and design, but we have a few legal doubts. as this is internet we are talking about, i am looking for some information on international law, or what tends to be the law in most places.
you dont need to go in to detail explaining or anything, just a couple simple links to the correct articles would be great.
my doubts are:
- to what extent can things be considered fair use under copyright law? text qutations, short video clips, etc… (i know a bit about DMCAs and that false ones can be contested and what not, but im looking more for what constitutes a violation of the DMCA.)
- what is the difference between public domain and open source? can open source things always be used for comercial use just like public domain can, or do they tend to have different licenses for each software/product etc… (as far as using it to create something, like using GIMP to make a picture, and then sell or market said picture.
- are there any not well known laws on the whole copyright thing that i should know of? (things that if i did them without knowing i could get in serious trouble) .. nothing obvious, i know the general things.
thanks for any help.

Business License, Copyright, trademark small online shops – help?
Hi,
I’m planning to start a small online business in the baby category/event planning category. I’m starting off small. I may secure a domain that exemplifies the key product (i.e. www.onesies.com – just an example but not the product i’ll be selling) I will be selling. In the future, I may expand it to another domain name that has more breadth (i.e. Myabcshop.com).
1. Do I need a business license to do this from home? I live in NY. Its only going to be myself no employees. I’m assuming that I would have to charge tax (and shipping) on orders, so i would need it or am i mistakend?
2. Do I copyright my website to ensure my product/images/copy is protected some how? Can competitors steal an idea or images I use that are part of my product if i don’t?
3. Do I register the trademark of my business (i really thought my simple product would be it for now until i’m ready to branch out more)? I thought that maybe when I branch out more that this may be required, but for now not.
When a copyright or trademark license expire, do they automatically turn into public domain?
And can another party make money after the copyright ends?
